DOUGLAS MAINA

I am always inspired by the power of makeup. So I wanted to try and put what I see on videos on paper. I worked with water colors to create the effects that I wanted. I used different brushes in order to make the darker areas appear the way they should. Also, with a wider brush, it blended almost seamlessly.

I did not get to do ay piece to do with drag queen directly but the research on the piorneers of drag and how the culture has grown is pretty amazing

For this piece, I wanted to show my love to my country but how i still 'cry' about all the injustice that is happening
I used a Kenyan newspaper and painted the Kenyan flag on it. I used some medium to make it transparent enough to see the newspaper.
I used watery red paint to get the teary effect. I poured it at the top and used a dryer to swoosh it down

I looked at Beyoncé and her latest piece of work. Her coven-like hat was almost the same as Nefertiti's crown.
I decided to print this picture which highlighted her raw self. I used the gloss to print and an oil to go over it. The oil brought back colour to the picture

I was inspired by Nefertiti to do something yo do with Black magic.
I cut of paper in a pattern then taped it ona clear jar
I then poured some black paint into the jar to symbolize the 'black' in this studio work

I also did a piece on Nefertiti's bust. The colors I used are in the book. I wanted different variations of this crown so that is why I divided into 4 spaces. I used acrylic paint and some glitter paint. I built up on some paints in order to get the most color.
I spray painted the jar with different colors
